The Freedom Quartet
Stories of freedom in connection
Freedom and humanity are themes that continue to connect. Getting to know each other’s history and exchanging experiences about it is more important than ever in this day and age. The Freedom Quartet brings these themes to life with stories and monuments that make the history of our region visible.
Input from the municipalities
The Freedom Quartet is an initiative within the Regional Program Freedom Achterhoek and Liemers. Since 2020, municipalities from this region have been working together on a cross-border program centered around freedom. Each municipality provided subjects they considered important to share. This makes the quartet a unique collection of stories deeply rooted in local history.
The participating municipalities are:
- Achterhoek: Aalten, Berkelland, Doetinchem, Montferland, Oost Gelre, Winterswijk, Bronckhorst, Oude IJsselstreek.
- Liemers: Duiven, Westervoort, Zevenaar.
Each card features a QR code. Scanning it will take you to the municipality’s page, where you can read more about the subject.

The quartet game will be distributed among the participating municipalities.
A quartet with meaning
The Freedom Quartet is more than a game; it is a connection of stories, events and monuments that played an important role in the Second World War. Thanks to the input of the municipalities, local memories and themes are shared in an accessible way.
The cards also contain a unique word cloud, composed of entries from Dutch and German participants in the ‘Freedom’ competition. This cloud reflects the most frequently mentioned words and shows what freedom means on both sides of the border.
The quartet is supported by the Province of Gelderland.

The Freedom Quartet is made possible by the Province of Gelderland. This cross-border program contributes to more connection, encounter, exchange about freedom and the realization that freedom cannot be taken for granted and that everyone can pass on freedom.
