The Freedom Quartet: Stories of Freedom in Connection

Freedom and humanity are themes that continue to connect. Getting to know each other’s history and exchanging experiences about it is more important than ever in this day and age. The Freedom Quartet brings these themes to life with stories and monuments that make the history of our region visible.

Input from the municipalities

The Freedom Quartet is an initiative within the Regional Programme Freedom Achterhoek and Liemers. Since 2020, municipalities from this region have been working together on a cross-border programme on freedom. Each municipality provided its own topics that they think are important to tell. This makes the quartet a unique collection of stories that are deeply rooted in local history.

A quartet with meaning

The Freedom Quartet is more than a game; it is a connection of stories, events and monuments that played an important role in the Second World War. Thanks to the input of the municipalities, local memories and themes are shared in an accessible way.

The cards also contain a unique word cloud, composed of entries from Dutch and German participants in the ‘Freedom’ competition. This cloud reflects the most frequently mentioned words and shows what freedom means on both sides of the border.
