Freedom Program Achterhoek and Liemers
Since 2020, municipalities in the Achterhoek and Liemers have been working together on initiatives to celebrate and strengthen freedom. The German border region is also involved in this collaboration. Various products have been developed through this partnership for use by organizations and residents.
Chain of Freedom
Municipalities in the Achterhoek, Liemers, and the German border region commemorate and celebrate freedom together. By connecting activities and initiatives, a ‘chain of freedom’ is growing in which stories are shared, generations come together, and we reflect on the meaning of freedom. Freedom Route Achterhoek and Liemers
The Freedom Route consists of five special cycling routes through the Achterhoek and the Liemers. Along the way, you will pass locations that serve as reminders of the Second World War and the long road to freedom.
Freedom Card Game
This ‘quartet’ card game features stories, events, and monuments from the Achterhoek and Liemers that played a significant role during the Second World War.
Freedom Song: ‘Ode to Freedom’
Choirs, brass bands, wind orchestras, and other organisations can download the lyrics and arrangements here, free of charge and royalty-free.

This magazine was compiled from entries for the competition What does freedom mean to you? The digital version is available to browse online.
Woordwolk / Wortwolke – More than just a picture
Two word clouds were created from the competition entries: one in Dutch and one in German. These word clouds can be used for a variety of purposes.

During commemorations and celebrations, lights form a symbolic chain of connection, representing our collective commitment to safeguarding freedom.

The Regional Freedom Programme is made possible by the Province of Gelderland. This transnational programme contributes to greater connection, engagement, and dialogue regarding freedom, fostering the awareness that freedom should never be taken for granted and that everyone can play a part in passing it on.
