Immediately after the war, he became a member of the 3rd Company of the DNB

Roelof Koens was born in Emmen on 20 April 1919, the son of Albert Koens and Hendrikje Koens-Boxem.

He went into hiding in the border region, in Groenlo or Eibergen. Immediately after the war, he became a member of the 3rd Company of the DNB. From his Neede group, others who joined alongside him included Johan Meerbeek, Jan Kottelenberg, and Derk ten Harkel.

On 10 May 1947, Roelof Koens married Gerritdina G. ter Welle from Groenlo in Borculo. They had a son and a daughter. He did not return to Emmen but remained in the region.

Roelof Koens passed away on 5 August 2005 in Enschede.
