Arend Jan te Brake was born in Aalten on 13 June 1921, the son of Berend Hendrik te Brake and Gerritjen Haverkamp. He was the fourth child in a family of nine.

His mother’s eldest sister, Wikkerink-Haverkamp, was active in the resistance along with her husband, son, and two daughters: the Wikkerink family of Lichtenvoordsestraatweg.

Arend Jan’s cousin Willem was a member of an assault group (knokploeg), and the daughters served as couriers for the resistance.
