Wijnand Foury
(Lichtenvoorde, 1915)
Member of the 3rd Company DNB
After the liberation, he enlisted as a member of the Dutch National Battalion
Wijnandus Lambertus Johannes (Wijnand) Foury was born in Lichtenvoorde on 23 May 1915, the son of Franciscus Foury and Francisca Foury-van Hoof. His parents originally came from Sittard and Tilburg, and his father was a shoemaker by trade. Wijnand grew up with two older sisters and a younger brother, Jan (1920).
From 1936 until May 1940, he lived and worked in Amersfoort before returning to Lichtenvoorde. In 1942, he lived in Zevenaar for a period before returning once more to Lichtenvoorde. His brother Jan was an active member of the LO (Landelijke Organisatie voor Hulp aan Onderduikers) and assisted downed Allied pilots in Lichtenvoorde. It is unknown whether Wijnand was also active in the resistance. However, he did serve as an official at the ration office (distributiekantoor) during the war, either in Lichtenvoorde or Zevenaar.
After the liberation in early April 1945, he enlisted as a member of the Dutch National Battalion and served on the staff of the third company.
On 6 January 1947, he married Wilhelmina B.M. Lageschaar in Lichtenvoorde. Between 1947 and 1955, their two sons and three daughters were born in Lichtenvoorde (the youngest in Groenlo). In his later career, he served as a proxy holder (procuratiehouder) at an insurance company.
Foury passed away in Bunnik on 30 July 1972.
